For patients using total prosthesis, lower dentures are usually not as stable as the upper ones. The main reason fort this is the lack of supporting tissue on the mandible. Another problem is the existence of the tongue and other soft tissue around the lower dentures.
As the bone resorbs by age, problems with stability increase. Upper dentures are more tolerant to resorbtion whereas it becomes impossible to keep the lower dentures stable.
Lately, a new generation of mini implants are developed to use on even the thinnest bones allowing us to connect the lower dentures to the lower jaw. The procedure is very simple and painless under lokal anesthesia and is usually done without sutures.
Most of the time denture adaption of the implant is done in the same session meaning the patient leaves the clinic with semi-fixed prosthesis.
